Chapter 1
YOU KNOW HOW PEOPLE use to say that saying, "Some things never change, and some things stay the same?" Well that's how my life is, sorta. My name is Gwyn Macklimer by the way and my life isn't as simple as any other ordinary teenager's life but I try to keep as un-complex as I can. Sebastian's Ball however, is no where near simple. Sebastian's Ball is a ceremony I have to go now that I'm sixteen, in a couple of more months I'll have someone I have to watch over, protect is more of a proper word. All Fallen Angels must have to look over someone a few months shortly after they become sixteen, that's why they have this event and don't even ask me why they named It Sebastian's Ball. This is supposedly one of most "critical" time in a Fallen Angels's life. Yeah, right. The strapless white and black dress I have on is seriously itching my back side now that I'm sitting down. The table I was at there were about five people sitting at It, including me. There was a girl who was sitting to the left of me with black hair, black makeup, and a black dress, there, Angelina is the resident Goth at my old school, nice girl, but she never said much. And tonight she didn't look as Goth as usual. "What are you staring at?" Angelina said to me. That caught me off guard. "Well for starters, you don't look so,"- "Gothic," Angelina cut me off. "I know, I think since I've been Gothic ever since I've been in middle school It's time for a change, you know, mix It up every once in a while." She said. I nodded and I understood where she was coming from. Then there was Dawn and Darline twins. They would always wear the same things as each other, and apparently still do. They sat on the right of me, both of them changed their hair from brown to rose red and their dresses were Polka Dot black and white with a red stripe right around the waists. "So how does It feel to finally be out on your own?" Dawn and Dareline asked at the same time to me, how they do that, the world will probably never know. "It feels good." I said. They both nodded in unison. "Us too."
Jason, the old jock at our school looked less and less, well like a football player would look if you saw him walking in the halls. His usual brown shaggy hair is actually gelled back and he's wearing a black tux. Nice. Guess everyone has to change every now and then. The whole museum turned ballroom for a night looked nice, really It did. There was vanilla silk coming down at the walls, vanilla silk on all our tables, and an exclusive band was playing here as well. I can't remember a time that my old school really went this far to make all these things happen. "Attention everyone," The announcer with auburn hair said. Everyone including me turned our attention from chatting friends and sipping on grape juice whatever else we have here. "I would like to thank everyone ecspicallly the Fallen teenagers in this room for coming out this evening. This is a very special and critical time in all of your lives and we teachers, faculty, principal, administrators, and everyone at our school is wishing and counting on you to make our legacy continue. It has been 16 years in the making for you all and I know you all are just waiting to see who you're going to get," The auburn haired woman had a glass in her hand that signaled the rest of us to raise our glasses as well. "A toast, to new beginnings." She finally said and everyone cheered and applauded, happy to finally be out into the real world. After a long night of catching up with everyone and probably giving my last goodbyes to the people I'd known since elementary school and looking at all the faces I've known for all in one room one last time, I finally thought about heading home. While I was walking outside into the unforgivingly cold and snowy weather, I picture what Jade would of said if she was here. Jade is my old friend who tragically died two weeks ago. Said It was a car accident that killed her, the police only got part of that right. I believe that she had a stalker that ran into her car and killed her, she had a stalker for a while and she would always ask me to stay over because she was nervous about sleeping alone. She was the only human friend I had-and possibly the only one I'll make ever.
My God it's so hard to find a taxi in Charlotte North Carolina. I swear one of these days I'm gonna buy a car, but first I have to pass the driver's test though. I could fly out of here but in the middle of downtown, there's no way I could mule over that It was just a eagle lying low to the ground. No way was I going to be off the hook. Jason accidentally bumped into me, which if he hadn't caught me, I would of made an embarrassing fall down the stairs outside. "Sorry Gwyn." Jason said. "Are you looking for a cab? Tough luck, It's hard to find one out here." He chuckled the last part out. "I'm finding that out." I grimly said with my hands crossed and my long black hair rustling in the harsh cold winds. "Well you can ride home in my car if you want, I don't think I live too far from where you do." He said. I considered that for a long minute. "So?" He said impatiently. "Alright, I'll go." I said and followed him to his brown Tahoe in the back of the old-museum-turned-ballroom-for-a-night. "Some other friends of mine are coming along with us, fair warning, they will be a bit wild." He said. I arched in eyebrow but said nothing and got in the back of the truck. Jason was right, his friends were a bit rutty, and even reckless, which made me want to get out of this truck even more. "Which street?" He yelled over everyone else in the car. "Make another left and stop at the house with the red door." I yelled back. This truck was practically squishing all of us in and only me and Jason had on a seat belt. When I saw the red door come into view I nearly fell out onto the street to get out of the car. "You okay?" Jason yelled above everyone else again. "Yeah I'm fine." I said. "Hey I almost forgot to tell you that they're having a Fallen Angels Party Only a couple of miles from here. Ever Fallen Angel from our old school is gonna be there. It's gonna be the story of the year. Did you wanna come? I'll give you a ride back." Six eyes looked my direction as I contemplated what I wanted to do. Everything at my school was 'The Story Of The Year' so I guess It wouldn't be so bad that I turned down the offer. "Um, no thanks, I'm really tired and need to get some rest for that new school I'm supposed to go to tomorrow." I said. Jason looked disappointed but didn't look away. "Okay, but It's gonna suck without you there." Somehow, I'd became popular in middle school because of some fight and just defended myself, ever since then I've been a 'Superstar' in middle school all the way up to now. I smiled at what he say however. "I don't think the party's gonna be a disaster just because I'm not there, I'm sure you guys'll be just fine without me." I said.
Looking in my purse for my keys, I stumbled a bit. "Crap." I said out loud to no one. Finally after a long pause I found my keys and opened the door to see a my uncle in the kitchen making diner. "Hey Gwyn, I know you probably ate at Sebastian's Ball but I cooked something here if you like," He said. I closed the door behind me and walked from the living room to the kitchen. The smell of pasta entered the whole house. "Smells good, did you actually cook It or get It from the Italian place down the street?" I said. Uncle Mel chuckled at that. "The Italian place down the street." He finally said. He's about in his late twenties, never actually told me his real age though so when we would go out, people would always say we were brother and sister because he had short shaggy black hair and I had long black hair and we both have heart shaped faces. We never really talked talked to each other a lot other than chatting about the few simple things in life, like weather, sports, stuff like that. "Well thank you Uncle Mel for the meal. It looks great." I said. He nodded his head, understanding what I was saying. "So how did Sebastian's Ball go? Did you enjoy yourself? Your dress looks great by the way." He said said getting a cup of coffee and sitting down across from me in the round car. "It was pretty good. Saw a lot of familiar faces, danced a little with friends, you know, things people my age would do." I said taking a bite of the pasta. Uncle Mel would never actually ask about Jade's death and how I was feeling about It, which believe me, I'm happy with but he always uses little codes for what he really means. "That's good." He said and we sat in silence for the remainder of our sit. When we finished the pasta, I washed dishes and Uncle Mel walked to the door. "Are you gonna be okay here by yourself?" He said. "Yeah, don't worry. I'll be fine." I said. He lives right next door to me. We live in the same apartment but he's so nice that he said I can have my own place as long as I pay at least half of rent. I practically dragged my feet upstairs and took my dress off in my room to get into my pajamas that aren't icthy and I tucked myself to into bed, hoping that tomorrow at my new school-my new human school, It wasn't going to be as bad as I'd imagine the past week over and over again in my head. The administrators said I should take some time off school, and time to grieve the lose of my friend. In my life there is no time to grieve, and I will not allow myself to grieve one single bit until I find out who killed Jade, and I won't rest until I do, I can never rest until then. So you can imagine what I had to say about that.
